I had purchased numerous grinders before finally investing in the Mazzer Mini. At the time I was considering purchasing a Rocky grinder, but everything I read indicated that anyone that buys a Rocky eventually buys a Mazzer. Like other reviewers said, this thing is built like a tank. What's more, virtually every part of this machine can be purchased separately in case of breakage / damage (like the hopper, hopper lid, doser lid, crumb tray, burrs).I am still on my original set of burrs, having between 1 and 6 drinks a day for 8 years, and I'm still getting a consistently perfect grind. One note on usage, though, is that you have to be prepared to tweak the grind setting occassionally. As the beans age (I roast at home) or the weather/humidity changes it affects how fine or course the grind must be to "time right" in your machine. If you're not roasting yet, you should seriously consider starting. Roasting is the single biggest thing I can think of to improve your home coffee/espresso-- more than prosumer machines or high-end grinders. Of course, these other things help too. For more information on roasting, check out Sweet Marias (not linking the site because I don't think that would fly). The Behmor 1600 roaster has been solid for me as well.Time for a latte.

I have had my Mazzer Mini for about a year now and love it.The MM is really a low end commercial grinder. That is it is meant to be a back-up grinder or used for decaf in a commercial establishment where it does not have to perform primary grinding duties but still stand up to the rigors of a commercial environment. The Mazzer is built like a tank and if you get one I hope you have a sturdy counter to put it on because it is not a lite-weight.This particular model has a "doser" and is really meant for dispensing ground coffee in to portafilters - filters for espresso machines. The doser is not designed to be removed. Mazzer makes a Mini model without the doser if your needs require such.If you are a serious espresso drinker this is the grinder you want. What makes this grinder so useful is that it is "stepless." There are no hard and fast grind settings. You dial in the exact grind level that you want. This is an absolute necessity if you are using a lever type espresso machine such as a La Pavoni. The MM uses a timer with an auto-shutoff feature. The sound of the grinder in action is hard to describe. You know the assuring sound of something that does a job really well? Well that is what the MM sounds like, a machine that does its job very well. When running (but not grinding) the motor emits a strong steady hum. When grinding there is no hint of bogging down the motor just grinds right through the beans even at the finest setting. It would have been nice if the hopper was glass but I will not hold that against the machine. As the above reviewer commented the machine comes preset for espresso. It has a convenient sticker so that you can easily go back to that setting if you need to change to a coarser grind - IE drip coffee. This is an expensive machine no doubt about it. But if you make a lot of espresso or are a "lever-head" this really is the machine you want to go with. The Rocky Rancilio is also a very good grinder I am not bashing it. But I do not regret my Mazzer purchase neither will you.

We have a relatively new rancillo expresso maker, but have been using a blade grinder for years. I can't estimate how much coffee I threw out because creating crema from a blade grinder that requires a perfect mix of right grind (counting seconds) and tamp. Enter the Mazzer mini, which came out of the box with the perfect set point for expresso. The coffee literally tastes different. It grinds beautifully, and we have used it for both expresso and Chemex-brewed coffee with great results. The doser on this is fiddly, but this is a minor inconvenience. We have used the Mazzer mini about a month now so can't speak to its longevity, but this is a heavy duty, very solid machine. Great purchase and worth the price.
