4Sturdy & Consistent But Not Versatile
By Michael G.
I've owned a Pasquini Moka 90 for a little over ten years and used it daily to make espresso. It has ran perfectly without a single hiccup. I'm very pleased with it, especially for the price. While not cheap in any way it's far from the ~$1k most real prosumer grinders cost.Bottom Line:A great grinder for someone getting truly serious about espresso that wants good consistent grind quality, low noise, low heat, and an attractive machine without spending $1k+. If you stick to one kind of brewing method, such as espresso, it's a fantastic machine. I'm giving it only four stars because it's not good for switching between multiple grind settings often and wastes more coffee grounds than I would like. The Pro's:1) Consistent grind quality with very fine setting adjustment ability. Creates nice fluffy static free grounds with minimal clumping (usually none).2) Quiet (compared to others). To talk over it you still have to raise your voice but it's not deafening. My wife sleeps through it when I make espresso at 5am.3) Easy to clean with no tool dis-assembly4) Gorgeous. All visible metal parts are polished chrome. The logo on the back is attractive. It has a retro & professional look (with some exceptions).5) Sturdy. It weighs 16 pounds which for its size makes it feel like a tank. The doser handle is a nice solid piece of metal which is satisfying to use.6) Very powerful. It's never balked at anything. I read reviews of other grinders in this price range in which people talk about their grinders jamming "only once or twice a year". This grinder has never once jammed in 10 years use.7) The burrs are high quality and have retained their sharpness.8) It is a "manual" machine; meaning you turn it on and it grinds until you turn it off. As a home user I like this as I grind only enough for the coffee I am just about to brew. Unlike similar machines that the same or more the on/off switch is large and in an easy place to to access. The Con's:1) Every plastic part looks and feels cheap. This includes the tamp on the front, the bean hopper, and the lid for the doser.2) The tamp on the front is worthless and ugly. Though it's very easy to remove you are then stuck with two open holes which though small are still ugly and detract from the overall aesthetic.3) It doses to the left. By this I mean when you dose the coffee out it does not fall straight down but instead towards the left. This is especially bad if you are grinding only a single portafilters worth and pulling the doser handle repeatedly while grinding (as most world champion barista's do it as well as ultra-high quality shops). It's easy to mitigate this by simply holding the porta filter to the left but is still annoying.4) The grind chamber is very large, as is the chute. This is nice in that it reduces static but it also means a fairly large amount of old grounds sit in there between uses. To ensure you use fresh grounds each morning you need to flush almost an entire pucks worth from the chamber (by grinding then tossing the coffee). It also means setting the initial grind wastes quite a bit of coffee as does switching grinds (say between coarse for a press pot and fine for espresso)5) When you disassemble it you lose your adjustments. This is normal but some other brands, such as Ceado, keep their settings (at nearly twice the price). Due to this I don't clean it as often as I would like.6) The hopper doesn't disassemble so there are surfaces which you are not able to clean, this is standard for most machines. Ceado is the only brand I know of that avoids this.7) The electrical plug is weird. It is flat against the wall (it plugs into the wall then makes a 90 degree turn so it doesn't stick straight out from the wall). However instead of being bend so it runs flat down the wall it is bent so it runs up. Put another way; instead of running the cord down from the ground plug it runs up the opposite direction. Not sure why they did this. Mine is 10 years old though, maybe that has changed.
