By Tons of Energy
Really Good Coffee is a big part of my daily life. I love coffee.I bought one of these Hamilton Beach HB Coffee Grinders in black because it was available, not because I had planned to do so. It was an impulse buy at the time.We needed to buy a grinder after we left a house-share situation with a very sophisticated grinder that we had grown accustomed to using. Due to extensive travel over the last few years, our regular coffee and kitchen equipment is in storage over 1000 miles from our current location. We purchased this Hamilton Beach grinder about 6 or 7 months ago and we paid about $14.95 plus tax.At the time of purchase, we figured if it lasted a few months we would be satisfied and we would have received our money's worth. It's now ~7 months later, and we use this grinder everyday for grinding whole bean coffee for "one-off" cups which we brew utilizing a "Melita style" drip system. We have chosen this brewing format because it is a portable system and it packs well in our suitcases. We travel now with this kit in our suitcases:Melita style drip plastic cone (paper filter holder)Melita style paper filters (#2)Hamilton Beach HB Coffee Grinder BlackWhole Bean Coffee of choice (French Roast Blend)If we are limited on baggage capacity we can buy coffee at the destination although sometimes we have found it difficult to locate good coffee upon arrival - depending on the location - so we have learned to always travel with enough whole bean coffee to get us by for a week or so.Thus we are able maintain a level of quality in the coffee we drink regardless of location, whether we are staying in hotel, a friend's house, or in a foreign country. We did recently travel to Costa Rica for 3 months and made the mistake of not taking paper cone filters with us or the Melita cone and were unable to find either anywhere to buy.We did, however, take our Hamilton Beach grinder with us.SERVICE LEVEL:We do not use this grinder a great deal. It's usually for enough whole bean coffee to make 6-8 cups a day so that each cup is freshly ground and brewed from scratch every time.Occasionally, I use the grinder to grind up nuts or herbs/breadcrumbs/seasoning combinations for breading meats when cooking. But the vast majority is for whole bean coffee only. And I prefer not to infuse the seasonings flavor into the coffee. But it does work pretty well for that application and if I were going to do that frequently, I would buy another grinder dedicated to that application only.FEATURE:One of the coolest features of the grinder is "removable grinder chamber" that makes it very convenient for dispensing the ground beans when I finish grinding them. I simply remove the chamber and take it to the location of the cup and Melita cone and it minimizes the mess and the cleanup. I like this design feature very much. Conclusion: Strongly RecommendThis is not a heavy duty piece of equipment. Yet is is an example of good engineering and design. It is practical, functional and quite inexpensive. I am very satisfied with the Hamilton Beach and recommend it highly for the application described.Just as a note, I used to own an espresso shop and I still have a commercial espresso machine and a Mazzer burr grinder (that I love) but currently they are in storage.Regards from sunny Florida...

By William J. Borden
I've used Krups and another brand before. The Krups grinder is over 10 years old and starting to die. The other brand broke after 10+ years as well. I'm not sure of the brand because I put it in the trash a few days ago. I like to have 2 grinders. One grinder for coffee and the other for spices.I also use the spice grinder to make bird food for my parakeets. The grinder allows me to make highly nutritious bird food that's inexpensive. My birds are very healthy and love the recipes I make for them. They eat better than I do.I just bought this Hamilton Beach grinder and my first reaction taking it out of the box was that I should return it unused. It looked so cheaply made. But after reading other reviews on Amazon, I thought I'd give it a chance.I like that you can hide the cord in the base and that the grinding chamber is removable. On the other grinders I'd needed to unplug them before cleaning out the contents. I was looking forward to not having to do this with the Hamilton Beach. Before I used it, I noticed a few things. The grinding chamber might be metal but it looked and felt like plastic. It certainly doesn't look like stainless steel. There was one plastic shaving in the grinding chamber. The grinding chamber was scratched but there was no evidence that anyone ever used it. It had that new appliance smell and I'm sure it's brand new. No one ever used it before. The blade was a little loose and I thought that grinds would make there way into the base but didn't want to prejudge.Normally I load up my grinders to the top and use them for several minutes at a time. They get pretty hot. Since I had my doubts as to the quality of this grinder, I put 3 tablespoons of white rice into the grinder and turned it on. To my surprise it worked excellent. It was doing a better job than my old grinders. However after 5 seconds it felt like the blade was going to fly out of the grinder. I was afraid to use it.I opened the container and threw out the rice (which was a very fine powder). The machine did an excellent job. However the blade was now extremely loose. There was rice dust in the base of the grinder because the blade was so loose in the grinding chamber. More disturbing was all the plastic shavings in the base of the grinder. I had destroyed this grinder in seconds without overloading it at all.If the blade falls apart in this grinder while you're holding it, I don't know what damage it would do to you or someone in the same room. Certainly from a safety and quality standpoint, I can't recommend this machine.

This is an inferior product, purchased elsewhere as it was all they had, it stopped grinding on the second use and smelled like burning plastic. I will be buying a Krups grinder today, a product I can highly recommend.
