4Great For Your Average Joe
By CD Junkie
First, let me say that I am NOT a coffee connoisseur (heresy, I know). Just a guy with a drip machine and a need for much morning brew. I wanted to grind my own because I hate the flavored coffee taste that I always seem to get from the grocery store grinder. I'm also busy and lazy.I really like this grinder; and I like it for the same reasons that the guy from Hawaii hated it. I want to spend my morning drinking coffee, not preparing it (one cup at a time? - yeah, right). Pour the beans in (no more measuring), push the button, and before you can fill the maker with water, you have just the right amount of grind ready to go. Yes, there's a little sticking to the plastic container, but I've never had it cause any mess - just tap it on the sink before you remove the lid then pour it into the filter. Grind size and quantity takes a couple of attempts to figure out exactly what you like, but seems pretty consistent once set. Only gave it 4 stars because there are features on the more expensive units that would be nice - a BIG, sealed, hopper that would hold several days worth of beans; and glass grind containers that would completely eliminate the static issue. However, for my use, and for the price, this thing works great. Hope it holds up over time.

4You get what you pay for, bad AND GOOD
By Kyle Nabilcy
I've been the owner of this grinder since February 20, 2005. In that time span, I would guess that the beans have gotten "stuck" (whereby the burrs spin freely without doing anything) maybe 5 times TOTAL. I make coffee about 3 or 4 times a week. So that's somewhere between 30 and 45 operations, and it's goofed up 5 of those times. NOT ONCE have I had to disassemble anything. You just hit the grind button again to stop it, jostle it GENTLY back and forth, and hit the grind button again. Of course, you lose the timed grind that is supposed to happen, but I view it as a VERY MINOR inconvenience to have to stand there and manually turn it off when it's done grinding. As for the complaints of size, I think we've pretty much come to a consensus among the reviewers that it's NOT freakishly huge, or whatever that one reviewer said. It's modestly sized, and certainly less blockish and imposing than, say, the Rancilio Rocky, for which you'll pay 5-10 times as much. The noise is not an issue for me, because it's no noisier than the old blade grinder I had. You've got to look at these kinds of issues like you would evaluate a car. Yes, a Rolls Royce is going to have less road noise than a subcompact Toyota, but the Toyota isn't going to set you back $50,000, and it's going to use less gas, AND it's going to get you there in just as much time. So there might be some noise (particularly when the beans get lodged funny), but it's no worse than the KitchenAid blade grinder that will wake up not only your partner, but also your dog and the local fire department.Lastly, the grind itself. I will agree with the complaints that have been lodged previously. First, the grind is generally too fine for the setting. I haven't tried french press yet, but I get the suspicion that it'll be too fine even on the coarsest setting. Additionally, there's a little bit of overground powder that comes through with every grind. This shows up as a very thin layer of sludge at the bottom of a brewed pot. And finally, the cup dial does not accurately reflect everything I've learned and been taught about how much bean goes into one cup of coffee. It does grind too long for the cup setting. But you learn this quickly, and it's a pretty easy fix. If you're making 4 cups, set the dial to JUST above 3 cups. Voila. And if you're making fewer than 3 cups of coffee, you should find a roommate. There's no good way to make coffee in that small an amount. My final thought on this grinder is that people who give it one star are being way too hard on it. I'd honestly give it 3 and a half, but I'll go with 4 just to boost its self-esteem a bit. You're paying $50 people. It's not a Rancilio. It's not a Mazzer, it's not an Isomac, it's not even a Starbucks Barista. But it's pretty good, and affordably priced, and it's a hell of a lot better than a blade grinder. For those of you who might WANT to spend $350-500 on a burr grinder, but know you reasonably SHOULDN'T, this is the grinder for you. Just learn to live with its quirks, and you have a fantastic bargain on your countertop.**UPDATE**French press works great. My favorite use for this setting: I grind up a baggie-full before I go camping, and with my Lexan French press, I get a spectacular cup of coffee, which makes my fellow campers extremely jealous.

5Perfect LITTLE Grinder!
By MestaySS
One other reviewer stated that this grinder is ungodly big - soooo not true. At a little under 10 inches tall, 5 inches deep, and 4 and 1/2 inches wide, this grinder is WAY smaller than my previous Cuisinart Burr Grinder which just recently broke. And the noise! DECIBLES quieter than my Cuisinart!!! It is such a low sound for a grinder. Mainly sounds a little louder than a murmur....First time I grinded coffee, I nearly jumped for joy that the volume was loads lower than my other one! Grinds were also very even. I grind in between medium and fine, and I did not see extremely powerdy grinds or even course grinds. Everything was very even in it's texture! Great grinder. I love it already!!!

5Hand Grinding
By D. Kinberg
Just recently, I learned about the health benefits of having two cups of coffee a day. I wanted to turn my coffee drinking into a meditative process and focus on healing. For many reasons, I decided that I would drink coffee made with a French Press. When I began my research into coffee grinders, I quickly discovered an entire world. I found Eletric Burr Grinders starting at about $40.00 and up. I really wanted to hand grind my beans so I continued my research. I quickly discovered two reasonably priced hand grinders and was ready to buy either the Hario Skerton or Kyocera Ceramic Burr Hand Grinder (About $40). I then did a google search and found out the both the Hario Skerton and Kyocera were excellent for grinding coffee beans very fine (for expresso) but were not as good for Coarse Grinding ( Recommended for French Press). After some additional research I found the Porlex and discovered an excellent hand Coffee Grinder. The outside oontainer is very well made, the grinding is consistent and only takes a few minutes to grind enough beans for one or two cups of coffee. If you are grinding beans for more than two (12 ounce cups of Coffee) you might find this is not the best grinder. The grinding is quick, quiet, and the resulting coffee is beyond excellent. I am very happy that I found this Hand Coffee Grinder and that is has enriched my coffee drinking experience.Enjoy,David

4Very Small, Grinds Fine, Fits nicely inside Aerobie AeroPress
By uniq
Works OK for fine grind, but not for coarse -- produces inconsistent grind. Very well made. Small -- fits inside the plunger of my AeroPress, which helps to keep it all in the AeroPress's pouch. Very comfortable to hold. Holds only one serving (about 2-3 measuring spoons), which takes about 160 cranks. Not bad at all, no need to keep opening and looking if you are done: you feel very well when there is no more resistence to cranking.

5Excellent Grinder for Single-Serve Brewers
By Paul Naglieri
I bought this to relieve my office-mates of the noise pollution created by an electric grinder. It is much smaller than I expected (about 4 inches tall and an inch and a half wide). The stainless steel casing and top makes for a very sturdy feel. It has enough room for about 3-4 tablespoons of coffee beans in the top (probably enough for two 10oz cups of coffee). For one cup, I put about one and a half tablespoons in there and it takes about 50 seconds of medium intensity grinding to finish). The grinding process itself is fairly easy - no real workout here, just some low-level resistance. The adjustment screw clicks as you tighten or loosen it so it is easy to calculate how tight you want it for certain purposes - I stick to 8 clicks from the tightest position for my single-serve drip coffee maker.

3Low end - but does the job
By E. Sharp
Summary: A good low-end manual coffee grinderUpdate December 2009: After use multiple times per day this grinder is still working as well as the day it was new. The only work I have done on it was to add a nylon washer at the base of the adjustment mechanism to stop the noise of metal on metal sliding contact which developed after a couple of months.Assembly: The grinder came in a nearly assembled state; assembly consisted of removing the top thumbscrew, placing the handle on the grinder shaft, and replacing the top thumbscrew. Total time: about 10 secondsConstruction: The actual grinder assembly appears to be of cast iron with a tapered burr rotating inside a stationary sleeve. The handle, bowl, and support / adjustment mechanism are of stamped steel. The burr and handle are connected by a steel shaft. The housing is made of painted hardboard. The drawer is made of unpainted hardboard.Grind Adjustment: The coarse to fine adjustment of the grind is accomplished by loosening the handle, then holding the shaft while turning an adjustment washer. This moves the burr up or down within the sleeve and closes or opens the passage area (a larger passage = coarser grind).Initial setup: Add some coffee beans to the bowl and turn the handle 10 - 20 revolutions. Remove the drawer and assess the grind characteristics. If it is too fine or too coarse for your purpose, adjust as required and repeat until it is as desired. The grinder is now ready to use.Normal usage: Add coffee beans to the bowl and turn the handle to grind, then remove the drawer and remove the ground coffee. At the fairly fine setting I prefer, it takes around 40 turns of the handle to grind enough coffee beans for a strong cup. Conclusion: Make no mistake - this is close to the bottom end of the manual coffee grinder scale and certainly won't win you any bonus points with those who want a coffee grinder as a status symbol. The drawer is a bit disappointing in terms of it's size (small) and material(bare hardboard) but for one or two cups worth of grounds it is sufficent, and I would not want to use this for grinding coffee for more than one or two cups at a time. On the other hand, you put coffee beans in, turn the crank, and they come out ground the way you want them. At it's price it does what I ask of it.

4Bargain grinder works just fine
By echord
I think some reviews of this little grinder may have been a bit harsh when you consider the low price, now under 15.00. True, it isn't high craftsmanship in either woodwork or mechanism, but why would you expect that for this price? Mine really works quite well, as least for the course grind I need for my French press, delivering an even, consistent grind, and it looks pretty decent on my counter top as well. I have no need for a fine grind, so I haven't tried it for that, but it's plenty easy to adjust the mechanism. It isn't without flaws by any means, including the fact that beans sometimes get caught between the hopper and wood frame, as another reviewer noted. It's easy enough to just shake the grinder a couple of times to loosen them, though, so that's not a big concern to me. Though the picture makes it look black, the one I got is actually a dark red wood with a copper (or copper colored) hopper and metalwork. The wood finish is a bit sloppy, but so what? It is what it is.If you don't expect perfection and want a functional grinder at a very low cost, I recommend it. I am very pleased, though having it only two days, I can't speak to it's long term endurance. But for 15.00, it seems to me a real bargain. If it cost 40 dollars I'd probably rate it 3 stars or less, but for what it is, I give it 4 stars, easily. It works, it looks pretty good, it's easy to operate and does a good job. What more could you ask?

1AVOID THIS NOW!
By P. Sagisi
I used this for less than a month when it broke. Even when it did work, it ground my beans so slowly I was thinking about returning it anyway. When the grinding burr fell off the shaft (stripped threads), that sealed its fate. Do not waste your time and effort with this headache! Zero stars, if possible!

4Noisy little gizmo that gets the job done!
By Octavia
Just fill the bowl with beans, press the button and with a lot of noise, this coffee grinder whizzes into action! Nothing's nicer than fresh ground coffee and this Cuisinart lives up tho the "Cuisinart" name.

Areas which I think need improvement are insulation of some sort, if loud, grinding noise for a few minutes bothers you. Also, this unit is not immersible, and you must clean it with a wet cloth rather than being able to dunk the unit in warm, soapy water. For this reason, I do not recommend using this for coffee and for spices, unless you are intentionally blending for flavor.

This grinds quite well, however the bowl isn't large and for large pots of coffee, I've found that I must grind the coffee in two loads.

You cannot see the consistency of your grind accurately, so you must open the unit and peek. It grinds so well and so quickly that it is easy to over-grind your beans.

All in all, it's a handy little gadget that grinds well and quickly. Its blades and motor have withstood regular usage. With little practice, you're able to grind uniformly. With routine use, I'm able to discern when the coffee is ground to my preferences by listening to the sound of the beans within the unit while grinding.

Let me say I abuse my coffee grinders. The ones I have had in the past have died young because I have dropped them in a dopey morning pre-coffee daze. I have dropped the Cuisinart numerous times and it is warped on one side from me leaving it on the gas stove with the oven on...IT STILL WORKS..just as well as the day it arrived. Best purchase I have made yet and I would buy another but I don't need to.

5Large capacity, rugged design
By Alex J. Avriette
This grinder lives in my kitchen right next to my sink. It is subjected to a continual flow of crud coming out of the sink and floods from coffee spills, and sink overflows, flying dough and vegetables, the works. It is extremely sturdy, and does tend to grind my coffee just as I like.

My only complaint is that it is a little hard to clean; but then I've never had a coffee grinder that was easy to clean.
