By L. Faye Bircheat
To be a true coffee "aficionado", you MUST grind your own. (Okay, to be a REALLY serious coffee aficionado, you must ROAST and grind your own, but that's a little too deep for me). And any true coffee aficionado will tell you that a burr grinder is much better than a blade grinder when it comes to getting the most out of those pricey little brown beans. I have owned the Melitta MEM1B for almost 4 years now and use it almost daily - sometimes several TIMES daily. It has outlasted THREE espresso machines along the way, and it is STILL going strong. I typically use the finest grind the machine is capable of (my preference for espresso). On its "finest" setting, the ground coffee looks closer to powder than "grinds". The only drawback I can see is that it doesn't let you put a large quantity of whole beans into its somewhat small top receptacle, but unless you like to grind a whole bunch of coffee at one time, this isn't a problem. It's better to store the beans in an airtight container until just before you grind anyway. For the price and the dependability, you cannot go wrong with this machine. If and when this little guy goes kaput, I'll probably replace it with another one just like it.

By Thomas Allen
I used to own this thing, or should I say "Beast". The concept is great: Precisely measured grounds from pot-to-pot. However, what you don't see on the box is the mess it makes when you pull out the plastic receptacle. Grounds spray out when the lid is removed. More grounds fall out when you try to dump them into the coffee maker. Add to that the fact that you have to tap on the bottom because the oils in the coffee cause it to clump along the sides. It's even worse in the winter when it's dry with a lot of static. Coffee goes everywhere. It's more mess than it's worth.

By A Customer
I've had this item for about 5 years and have nothing negative to say about the ground coffee it produces. Sure, there's a little spillage when I remove the grounds for use, but that's always seemed like a minor and eminently bearable detail. The burr grinder has had hard use, but I've never replaced it and the grind is consistently just as I like it. No complaints there.
The plastic ground-coffee receiving receptacle is a major weakness however, just as other reviewers have said. The material is quite vulnerable to cracking and does not glue well. In fact, a broken (and unavailable replacement) plastic receiving cup is the only reason I'm shopping for another grinder. Seems a shame since the rest of the thing is great! I'll go for a different model next time.
